Adulterous People

by Dayna Collazo

Adultery feels a little like death. Let me explain. When I was asked to guest write and the topic of adultery came up I have to admit I was afraid. Afraid that what I think about it now may not be what I think about it years from now after the storm has passed. But today there was an ache in my heart that told me “Just be honest”. So here goes nothing!

The shock of adultery stings the depths of your heart. It’s as if a part of your own body is plucked, while you’re alive, and placed on someone else involuntarily. If that decision leads to divorce then divorce feels like death. Adultery feels like a kidnapping and divorce feels like death.

This comparison may seem grim. Maybe even considered extreme, but that’s how it feels. The good part to all of this is that Jesus died so that we may escape death. He promises not only His peace but His justice, His vindication, His protection, and most importantly His love.

It is also important to note that when we become believers we enter into a marital relationship with the Lord. Each time we set up idols or give life to our problems we too are committing adultery. When we are convicted and bring it to God He looks at us and sees the death of His son. The difference is that after the death of His Son follows the Resurrection, and because of that our sin is erased.

Adultery is sinful. Adultery is painful. But adultery is also an opportunity for grace. The same grace God Himself gives to us when we too have committed adultery against Him. My prayer today is that my life reflects Jesus. In everything that I do no matter how much it hurts and that I always remain faithful to my first love–Jesus.

“You adulterous people, donʼt you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.” James 4:4 NIV
